"Marae" is a gathering place for Maori. Takahanga Marae, Kaikoura, is private property so you are unable to wander through at your leisure, but must be officially welcomed, observing the correct protocol and ritual.

  Great pic, but I am wondering whether permission was sought from the Kati kuri people before it was uploaded on to this sight. Such Poupou/ totum poles/carvings are not merely decorations but ancestors of the people of the area.
