The largest breeding colony of fur seals around Kaikoura is found at Ohau Point (on State Highway 1 just north of Kaikoura). The rocky coastline provides good protection for the young pups. The seals of Kaikoura feed mostly on squid and lantern fish at night within deep, offshore waters. The fur seals spend most of the day resting on the rocks.
